Weīve been here almost two weeks and its amazing how fast time goes. So many things to see, people to meet and no time to sit in an internetcafe for some time to write everything down. Also, there are fewer internetcafes than I had expected so this is the first update. First the bad news: the motorcycle is late! Arriving December 10 instead of November 30. Damn, Liselot and this īCheī are going to cut some of the trip short... Strike in the harbour of Rotterdam, they say. I need a break.
Why couldnīt they go on strike another time? Some Argentinians are very sceptical about both the arrival date and the customs in Buenos Aires. Apparently, there is a fast and a slow way to get the motorcycle through customs. A legal and illegal way or semi legal way. But it needs to arrive before we can start to play with these customs guys. To see some other sites we changed Buenos Aires for Montevideo , Uruguay, two days ago. Yesterday we went to Colonia (Uruguay) an old smugglers fort. Very tranquilo (quiet), maybe too tranquilo. Not a lot of smugglers around these days. Today a new rush in Montevideo. After one week of Buenos Aires you need to relax as you can understand.
In B.A. we were cruissing around most of the time with Paula, Mattias sister. She is unbelieveable! Showing us everything that can be done in the area from watching to Asado (Argentina barbeque), from La Boca to Palermo. This is one of the most fantastic cities Iīve seen in some time. It has everything: beautiful people, great weather, the food is fantastic and for europeans almost for free. Liselot is sad that we didnīt end our trip here because the shopping here is also great. No room though on La moto for any shopping.. In La Boca on the side of B.Aires you can find the stadium where Maradonna used to play and next to that the bad guys. We found them, but fortunately before they had found us. While walking around in the area of La Boca we were intercepted by the Police who escorted us back to a more save area. After that we decided first to read the lonely planet - the area is apparently well known for muggings etc. well, we survived! We were looking for Tango in La Boca. We found some but not as good as seen in Cafe Tortoni. Which we still havenīt seen either because the tickets are always sold out. How do we make a reservation in Spanish? Que Quires? Tango is big here. They dance it in the streets, but not very often. From Tango we moved on to Theatre Colon a famous theatre open since 1908 and now closed for renovation (bum). We did the tour but no tango here.
Last weekend we went to one of the most important matches of Polo here in Argentina. Semi final. Polo is a great game to watch. Half of the time we couldnīt track the ball, but the players did and they were racing over the field. Beautiful, and bloody unbelievable that anyone is able to hit a tiny ball from the back of a horse at flying speed... All the time we were sitting on the cheap benches, eating an icecream, support both teams (as if we knew who was who anyway) and say some friendly words when whichever team passes by. The crowd was great too, lotīs of enthousiastic young people. For the people that donīt know what polo is about: each team has 4 players. You require 6 horses per team member. The game has 8 seven minute īhalvesī, and only like a 3 minute break - poor horses. The pitch is huge and there is one tiny, tiny ball that you have to whack through one of the two goals (no goalkeeper). It sounds so easy.. We should start a team. Well I suppose well have to start with one horse - and learn how to ride a horse again, and become very rich to afford it all.
One bad thing about B.A. is the pollution. You should just see some of the smoke that comes out of the buses here.. The Japanese should not go here. You will need full size air filter equipment. Temperatures, tiempo, calores, this country is hot. Writing messages in hot internetshops consumes serious energy. We need some wind. I canīt wait for the motorcycle to arrive and hit the road. That is what we are here for! Finally we can use our heavy duty motorcycle lock that was taken by mistake in our handluggage from Amsterdam to B. Aires. Some advise here donīt take locks of 8 kgs in your handluggage, security officers see alarm bells ringing that normally donīt ring. We had some luck here: It is not allowed, but with a lot of smiles and good talking (thanks Liselot) we could take it as long as we didnīt take it out in the plane (as if..). Both Dutch and Frence security helpt us to get this lock in B. Aires. Thanks guys! Pictures will follow this weekend! hasta luego..
Great story Jan !! Hope the XT600 will arrive on time….
stay clear from the bad guys, and the Police !!

Groetjes.
He Lot & Jan,

Mate, hope you r fine. Please when you got time, send me a tel num where i can call you to! we can have a nice chat! i am sorry to hear that you got problems with bike but I guess you are riding your horse through the Americas.

happy travel, Polle
Betalende klant?
Ola Jan and Liselot,
Como estas? Good to hear you are ok. I am still in France and will get to the cold country,Canada, on the 21. Snowing like crazy over there. Just drove back from Montpelliere and going to Paris for a rondezvous. Will be in Ams for 3 days on the 18. Hope you get your bike soon. I told you about the pollution in South America before you left. Pinochet died a few days ago, so be careful when you get to Chili. Stay clear of bad guys and the police. Especially in South America. Uruguay is suppose to be one of the safer places, too. Argentina is suppose to be where the beautiful people are. Merry Xmas.
John
Jan en Liselot,

Charlotte
ik ben nofg in atlanta, temperatures still rising here, 25c vandaag, lekkerrrrr
Yo GUYS! Arrived today in Bariloche, close to the Chili border. Will cross the Andes tomorrow. Engine is running strong. Weather situation sucks around 12 degrees COLD, heavy wind and my favourite argentinian rain. I need to rearrange my stuff and hotels. We’ll be back soon!!!
